Applicant must be at least 18 years old. High school diploma and North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician certification required. The ability to obtain North Carolina Level II Firefighter certification is also required.
Successful applicant should have some knowledge of current firefighting practices and procedures, firefighting hazards and related safety precautions, city geography and street locations; skill in operating firefighting tools and equipment, such as pry bar, ax, hose, nozzles, air packs, fans shovels, rakes, sledgehammers, jaws of life, defibrillator, engine trucks, etc.; ability to establish effective working relationships with members of the squad, company, station house, and general public; ability to conduct fire prevention and fire safety training to all age groups, including school age through senior citizen; and the ability to represent the city fire department in a positive manner.
